Meeting Paul

I met the disgustingly skillful Paul Heaston early this morning in NYC.  We have known each other's work for years through our respective blogs, Facebook and Flickr, and today we were meeting for the first time.  Seeing his work in real life, flipping through the pages of his sketchbooks was a thrill.  We sketched on the High Line while talking for hours.  As with Liz Steel a year ago, it was nothing short of an exhilarating experience.

A little trip to the ER yesterday yielded some sketchy doodles.

Not much is happening on this blog these days, as I am drawing almost exclusively for the book.  But here is a quick mug drawn on a diner place mat, because sometimes that's all I can fit in a day of writing and doodling.

Drawing from magazines

Sometimes, there's a picture in a magazine. It happens to be a famous actor, whoever. In this case, Joaquin Phœnix, the caption says. I want to draw it. On the iPad. Where the surface is less than ideal for cross-hatching.
